One Stop Shop
What is it?
The One Stop Shop is a Community and Career Closet available to Shawnee Mission North Students and/or families to assist students with short term needs so students can focus on their education. At Shawnee Mission North, approximately 50% of our students quality for free or reduced lunch. This means that a majority of our student body struggle to overcome many things taken for granted by others such as access to gently used clothing/interview attire, school supplies, personal hygiene products and other simple necessities.
The closet is a student-led space organized and maintained by the Jobs for America’s Graduates- Kansas (JAG-K) classes along with their teachersAmanda Polking. The JAG-K students accept the donations, launder clothing received, inventory the supplies, respond to order requests and share about the space with the entire SMN student body.
How it Works?
Any student in need because of financial difficulties is eligible to use the services of the One Stop Shop. To provide students with a private and safe environment, students can communicate with Student Services (Social Workers and Guidance Counselors) along with School Nurse, Student Resource Officers or Administration to request assistance. Student use of the One Stop Shop is kept confidential, so students do not feel that they will “stand out” by utilizing the resource. We want students to feel good when in the One Stop Shop and to have a positive experience.
How You Can Help?
Other SMN student organizations are welcome to assist with the One Stop Shop via drives such as hat and mitten tree, sock collection or personal hygiene collection. Donations are gladly accepted. Please contact Amanda Polking if your organization is interested in participating.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and continues to support the success of the One Stop Shop. It would not be possible without the support of the Shawnee Mission North Community.
