IB - International Baccalaureate
Shawnee Mission North High School

Shawnee Mission North became an authorized International Baccalaureate World School in 2012. Forty students were enrolled in classes in its inaugural year, mostly in their junior year. Students select participation in either the full diploma or in individual courses. Full diploma students complete courses in each of the six curricular areas and Theory of Knowledge.
The six curricular areas are: English, World Language, Individuals and Society, Experimental Science, Mathematics, and Arts/Electives.
In addition, students accumulate hours for the Creativity, Action, Service (C.A.S.) component, which requires 150 hours over approximately two years, split between those areas, with written reflections upon completion.
The Extended Essay is a problem-based, research-based, college-level paper, on a topic of the student’s choice, which is constructed by diploma students with the aid of a mentor during the two-year program. Diploma course students may take any IB course offered at SM North, but do not participate in the C.A.S., Extended Essay, or Theory of Knowledge requirements for full diploma students. Many IB courses are two years in length and are in place of, not in addition to, district and state requirements for graduation. Our program offers open enrollment, but teachers and staff actively encourage students with strong ability and interest to participate.
